Problem
There is an overpopulation of cats in the shelter, most of those cats are surrendered by owners for issues that can be problem-solved at home. Employees need better training to understand how to fix common behavior problems at home so they can advise owners.
Solution
After conducting a needs analysis of the shelter's problem, and accessing the targeted learners, I made a few suggestions: an e-learning course, in-person training, and a job aid.
Design and Development
I began by conducting a needs analysis to determine what learning solution would best serve this issue, which included an action-mapping session. Once complete, I drafted my recommendations and presented them to the stakeholders. It was decided to pursue eLearning, so a text-based storyboard was completed and approved.
Drawing inspiration from the shelter's mission and values, I crafted a course with a simple and clean aesthetic, incorporating engaging graphics of cats and kittens to create a visually appealing experience. The color scheme was carefully selected to align with the organization's logo, fostering a sense of cohesion and unity.
The course content was meticulously curated to cover essential topics such as understanding feline behavior, identifying common behavioral issues, and implementing effective strategies for behavioral management. Through interactive modules, multimedia resources, and real-life case studies, learners were empowered with the knowledge and skills needed to address behavioral concerns effectively.
Takeaways
The results speak for themselves. Following the completion of the course by all staff members, the shelter observed a remarkable 10% decrease in cat returns within just 45 days. This tangible outcome underscores the effectiveness of the training program in equipping staff with the tools necessary to positively impact the lives of both cats and their owners.
